BY RICHARD HUGHES, ON MARCH 3RD, 2016
The Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD) Board of Directors voted unanimously February 10th, 2016 to oppose the proposed Steelhead LNG facility to be located in Saanich at Bamberton.
Two days after that vote the CVRD Chair Jon Lefebure, CAO Brian Carruthers and General Manager of Planning Ross Blackwell started a campaign to discredit the motion and the Director Lori Iannidinardo who brought the issue to the table.
They obtained a secret flimsy legal opinion that they suggest shows that the motion shows bias. They have continued their misinformation campaign infuencing the elected representatives by frightening them into believing that they will face legal action if they do not remain neutral.
This of course offers great benefit to Steelhead LNG who met with planning boss Blackwell ahead of an anticipated rezoning application.
Now it appears further LNG operations are planned at Mt. Hayes north of Ladysmith in the North Oyster Electoral Area.
If the LNG crowd sway the senior staff, who continue to bully and misrepresent the rights of elected officials to speak out in opposition, then we could end up being sandwiched in between LNG facilities at or near the northern and southern boundaries of the Regional District.
It will most interesting to see how first term Ladysmith Mayor Aaron Stone and Mary Marcotte, the politically well seasoned longtime North Oyster Director, respond now that a possible LNG facility and super LNG tankers could be locating in their neighbourhoods.
They both spoke in favour and voted for the recent CVRD board motion opposing LNG facilities from locating in the region.
I believe that it is fairly certain that First Nations will be up in arms over such LNG lunacy.
Grab your hats, I smell gas!
